I gave a lecture a few years ago to a group of students on British peas - hopefully more interesting than it sounds... It is an amazing industry working to provide nutritious food across the UK. Here are some key facts. In the six weeks of the British harvesting season, the 700 British pea growers and all the people that work for them harvest, shell and transport the peas from field to frozen as quickly as possible to capture all the nutrients inside the peas [1].
- Frozen peas are a zero waste food in the home - no peeling, they come ready to cook.
- Peas a good source of protein, fibre, vitamin A, vitamin C, folate, thiamine (B1), iron and phosphorus.
- On average each person in the UK eats 9000 green peas a year - multiplied by 67 million people that's a lot of peas...
