What does regenerative mean?
Regenerative describes a process or activity that can deliver regeneration i.e. to renew, regrow, restore, replace, or regrow. As an academic interested in words for me each of those re. words has a different meaning and I recognise all of those meanings when I hear people speak about regenerative economies, regenerative communities, regenerative farming.
What does regenerative mean to you?
One Cambridge Dictionary definition of regenerative is "relating to the improvement of a place or system, especially by making it more active or successful, or to making a person feel happier and more positive." [1] This definition suggests a continuous improvement element to being regenerative for place, system and for people.Where can we find an example of restoration and regeneration?
I often talk with students about reversing the most extreme problem: desertification. The World Atlas of Desertification is worth checking out to see the major issues around the world - tree loss, water stress, decreasing land productivity. For the communities that live in these vulnerable regions there are examples of restoration e.g. the Loess Plateau in China where afforestation and green policies over decades have led to nature and community recovery.
