Foodome, foodomics, metabolome, metabolic, metallomics...

What is the foodome?

The foodome is ʻthe collection of all compounds present at a given time in any investigated food sample and/or in any biological system interacting with the investigated food.ʼ[1]

What is foodomics?

Foodomics is a wide field of science that considers the 'foodome" So what is the foodome?

What is the metabolome?

The food metabalome is the total of all the metabolites present in a food that can be identified.

What is metabolomics?

Metabolomics involves the application of advanced scientific technologies, both targeted for a specific metabolite or non-targeted. These technologies can combine food science, computer science and engineering science, to identify the physical, chemical and biological structure of food, the innate characteristics of the food and how they relate to human health and well-being.[2] Metabolomics has an important role in determining food authenticity i.e. the food is what it is claimed to be.[3] Developing product testing methods using metabolomics means that a food can be described in terms of its metabolite profile giving a unique fingerprint.

What is metallomics?

Metallomics considers the interaction between bio metals, bio-function and biochemistry within a plant, animal or food at the nanoparticle level. It is an emergent discipline right now in food science but is set to develop further and might be of value in determining food authenticity.

So, foodomics and its application can be used to support the assurance of quality, safety and food integrity within food supply chains.
